Please check out the first installment of building a community prior to reading on. I spent much of this week listening and re-listening to Seth Godin’s new book entitled Tribes (I think the audio book is the best way to consume this information, it’s 4 hours read by Seth himself). If you haven’t read/listened to it, I suggest you do so immediately. Here are the major ideas/quotes I took from this inspiring read:
- “Life’s too short to fight the forces of change. Life’s too short to hate what you do all day. Life’s way too short to make mediocre stuff. And almost everything that is standard is now viewed as mediocre.”
- To develop a tribe, you simply need a shared interest and a way to communicate.
- Challenge the status quo, both in your personal and professional life by taking the lead.
- “Leadership is scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort required to lead. This scarcity makes leadership valuable.”
- It’s important to not only lead a tribe of followers, but to develop relationships within the tribe.
- “At first, the new thing is rarely as good as the old thing was. If you need the alternative to be better than the status quo from the very start, you’ll never begin.”
- “Being charismatic doesn’t make you a leader. Being a leader makes you charismatic.”
Remember that “the only thing holding you back is your own fear.” I hope everyone out there continues to crush it.
