Search Engine Optimization commonly referred to as SEO is one of the most important aspects of running a successful website. A sound SEO strategy will result in the majority of traffic to your site and can level the playing field by allowing smaller sites to march up the search rank on Google and Yahoo.
So how should you go about getting started with SEO?
First, it’s all about the text. Search engines read text on a website and searchers type text, it’s imperative to have the right keywords and key phrases on your page. If I’m searching for a pizzeria in Murray Hill NYC, and your company is not one of the first couple results, you’ve lost my business. Think about how people refer to certain things within your business. For example, if you’re a doctor, use the commonly referred to term for specific conditions, not the technical term.
To determine what keywords people are using to find your business, the first thing you should do is get a basic analystics package, such as Google Analytics. Analytics become more valuable over time because they track the history and usage patterns.
Remember that SEO is not a one time immediate fix, it’s a strategy. This is especially true for bloggers, since you’re continually adding fresh content to your site.
The next thing to consider are backlinks. Backlinks are, as the name implies, links on other sites that lead back to your site. Having backlinks from reputable sites have a proven value with search engines. This is more of a long-term pursuit. Over time, as you build relationships with other bloggers, feel free to politely ask them to add your site to their blogroll. Again, it comes back to content, if you have quality content, people will voluntarily link to your site because they see your service as useful.
SEO takes time, and like anything in the blog world, a ton of effort. I hope this gets you thinking about SEO and its importance in building traffic to your site. What is your favorite SEO tip?
