I recently wrapped up my first semester at the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate. I learned a ton and met a lot of cool people. Click here to read my thorough review of the program.
Unlike undergrad, most of the students continue the program throughout the summer either taking classes full-time or interning and taking 1 or 2 courses.
This summer I’ll be working as a consultant with Better Homes and Garden Real Estate. BHGRE is an emerging real estate brand that offers a full range of services to brokers, sales associates, and home buyers and sellers. It’s a truly progressive brand that has embraced the power of technology and social media. With BHGRE I’ll have the opportunity to combine both my interest in finance as well as brand management/marketing through the use of social media. I’m exited to get started.
In addition to working as a consultant, I’ll be completing my final tier I course. You can read the entire program overview here
Real Estate Economics and Market Feasibility – This course examines connections between the national economy and real estate markets from both a theoretical and empirical perspective and introduces camagra buy appropriate data sources and techniques useful in their analysis. It explores the performance of specific property types under different macroeconomic business and growth cycles and changing monetary conditions. The course also examines the economic structure of major metropolitan areas, the impact of urban economic growth on specific property types, and conditions under which certain regions thrive while others decline. Building upon the concepts and tools of economics analysis, modeling techniques to forecast real estate supply and demand in different markets and how to estimate market supply and demand for particular property types at specific locations are also developed.
Students can also audit non-credit courses for free. This is one of the great advantages of the full-time masters program. I intend on auditing at least the following course:
Fundamentals of Construction Documents – The ability to read construction drawings and plans accurately is a skill required in the management of construction projects. This seminar for real estate owners, managers, and construction contractors discusses contract documents–plans, specifications, and construction-working drawings–for reinforced concrete, steel, wood frame, and masonry construction, as well as for some mechanical and electrical construction. Topics include floor plans, elevations, sections, details, symbols, schedules, specifications, and abbreviations used in architectural and engineering drawings.
I feel this class is especially important. As someone who wants to one day operate his own development/investment firm, a solid understanding of construction documents and the construction process as a whole is imperative. Every real estate professional I speak with implores me to gain an understanding of all the sub-sectors of real estate. Just understanding the legal aspect or the finance aspect is great, but if you want to develop one day like I do, an understanding of all aspects is crucial.
In addition to these 2 courses, I am also going to pursue a “LEED Green Associate” certification. Green building is no longer an option, I think it’s a personal obligation to build sustainably. Virtually all new construction is “green,” even if it doesn’t receive the LEED stamp of approval. Furthermore, as the economy picks up, we will see an uptick in the amount green renovations.
The LEED certification process has been overhauled recently and the guidelines to acquiring such certifications have become more stringent. I’d like to pursue a LEED AP certification one day, however it requires 2 or more years of experience working with green buildings. As a student, I can get the “Green Associate” certification, then fairly easily upgrade to the AP certification as I gain more experience.
I’m excited to continue being a student of the game.
