I’ve done plenty of reviews of real estate graduate programs, so I decided to vary it up a bit and review one of the many undergraduate programs focused on real estate.

“The Marquette Center for Real Estate (CRE) was established to generate, disseminate and deepen commercial real estate knowledge on campus, in Milwaukee, throughout the Midwest and on a national level through three key areas:  Teaching, Research and Outreach. The Center’s vision is to be a nationally recognized leader among applied commercial real estate programs. As the only Jesuit university in the country offering a commercial real estate curriculum, the program is uniquely grounded in a solid foundation of business principles, ethics and an environment that engages students, professionals and academics alike.”

I met Tyler Gage on the new commercial real estate network, The Real Corner. He is  graduating from Marquette University with a focus in Real Estate and Marketing. He is currently working at Towne Investments in Milwaukee, WI.

He is also president of Marquette’s Real Estate Club.

What was your background in real estate prior to the program?
Prior to the program, I had no real estate experience. I was entering Marquette as a business student waiting for my calling. Not until the spring semester of sophomore year, did I declare real estate as a major.

What other programs did you look at besides The Marquette Center for Real Estate and why did you choose Marquette over the other programs?
Due to the previous question, I did not look at any specific programs for real estate. After I graduate in the spring of 2010, I am looking to further my education at Madison, WI.

Are the professors primarily full-time or part-time? Do the part-time professors make themselves accessible outside the classroom?
Our professors are primarily full time. Our part-time professors are usually doing research, but are always 100% accessible outside the classroom.

Do you notice a variation of the material taught by different professors of the same course?
Each department in our business school is very closely tied together and works extremely well together. The material taught is different, but are always on the same side of the spectrum.

What kind of opportunities does the program provide to students outside the classroom?
Marquette’s Center for Real Estate has many programs and opportunities outside the class room. We have the club, ACRE, IREM, CARW, WCREW and many more programs that the Center offers to the students to join and be part of. As for the club, we invite all Real Estate students to join and sit in on speakers that are held off campus.

How is the programs career counseling? Do they actively help students find summer internships and full-time positions? How willing are alumni in assisting current students?
We have a very good Real Estate database that actively works closely with students and putting them into contact with professionals in the field they are interested in. The Alumni and students have a mentorship program that they sing up for and help students for a full year shadow them. The alumni play an important role into our Center.

What are your future aspirations in real estate and how has this program helped you to get closer to your goals?
My future aspirations in Real Estate are to open my own firm long term. Being a leasing associate for Towne Investments, I have learned the side of leasing and brokerage. I want to take my knowledge and invest into income generated properties and lease my own buildings. The Center at Marquette has helped me tremendously and will further do so in the future. I have established a long term relationship with the program to assist me in the future.

How many classes are required to complete the program?
The program requires 6 full time classes in classroom with an internship in the field.

Rate the various aspects of the program from 1-10, 10 being the best:
Professors:Curriculum:8
Career Counseling:9
Outside Opportunities:9
Overall Rating:9
