georgetwon-real-estateIt’s great to have multiple reviews of the same program, however what is especially great about this review is that it comes from a student in such a different stage of his professional career. The first review of the Georgetown MPS in Real Estate Program came from a full-time student fresh out of college.Conversely, this review comes from a part-time student who has a few years of experience under his belt.

Here’s what he had to say about the new MPS in Real Estate Program at Georgetown University.

What was your background in real estate prior to the program?
I spent nearly a year doing commercial real estate research with CoStar and I had spent two years as a financial analyst for RCLCO (Robert Charles Lesser & Co.) analyzing internal company financials and analyzing pro formas and such for consulting engagements for our clients.

What other programs did you look at besides Georgetown and why did you choose Georgetown over the other programs?
Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Cornell, and MIT.

I chose Georgetown because I was already working in DC.  I am also a little older than most graduate students and feel like committing to a full-time program would hinder my family and financial responsibilities.  The part-time program was perfect.

Are the professors primarily full-time or part-time? Do the part-time professors make themselves accessible outside the classroom?
Mostly part-time.  Some do and some are too busy with their professional schedules.

Do you notice a variation of the material taught by different professors of the same course?
No, pretty much the same.  Although, the law material was dumbed down after the first class, which I was in, because it was presumed too much.

What kind of opportunities does the program provide to students outside the classroom?
I was out of the loop when they started the student advisory committee and the administration wasn’t that vocal about it.   They have a Chesapeake Bay project going on but I am not involved with that either.  It’s along the lines of environmental research while I’m more interested in finance.

How is the programs career counseling? Do they actively help students find summer internships and full-time positions? How willing are alumni in assisting current students? Since it’s a new program, are alumni in a position to help students?
The administration sends us emails about internship and job opportunities.  No alumni yet.

What are your future aspirations in real estate and how has this program helped you to get closer to your goals?
I would like to work with a REIT.  I really want to learn all aspects of acquisition and asset management in a REIT.  I like the idea of researching, acquiring, and managing assets for growth rather than developing or “flipping” them for a quick profit.  Plus, I think the legal structure of REIT’s help maintain corporate profit integrity.

I interviewed with a succesful REIT in DC right before I started the program.  I didn’t get the job but I made it very far in the process.  If I knew then what I have learned from the program, I think I would’ve landed the job.  I feel like if I have the opportunity to interview with a REIT again, I have a better chance.

How many classes are required to complete the program?
10 classes

Is there anything else about the program you think people should know?
It’s still in the infant stage and we are going through some growing pains.  I’m not fond of the Georgetown campus or it’s facility.  It is hard to get to by public transportation and the classrooms are a bit out of date, technologically.

Rate the various aspects of the program from 1-10, 10 being the best:
Professors:  8
Curriculum: 8
Career Counseling: 7
Outside Opportunities: 7
Overall Rating: 7.5
