Barry Sternlicht is one of the smartest guys in real estate and definitely someone I aspire to be like. In this short video he discusses his decision to go out on his own and found Starwood with 100K of his own cash and 1M that he and a few partners scraped together. The one overriding point that stands out to me in this video is the idea that there is no better time than the present to follow your passion. If you have an idea, just go for it. There will never be an ideal time to start your own company. What are you waiting for?

Also check out this interview that Barry Sternlicht did with Maria Bartiromo. He gives a lot of interesting insight into how he became successful, how he looks at the world and how he became who he is today.

Great entry. I saw this interview a few days back and it reminded me of where I am with my career:
31 years old sick of corporate America and about to go off on my own.
I am not saying, however, that I am going to be the next Barry Sternlicht. I am sans two ivy league degrees but have the drive to do what I want to do…

Nick, thanks for your comment. Education, connections, timing, yes
they're all important, but there's no substitution for passion.

There really is no better time to go off on your own. I'd be
interested in learning more about your plans. Let me know if there is
    any way I can help.
