NYU Real Estate Institute LogoThis rumor has been going around for quite sometime, but I wanted to wait until it was official before I announced it on the site. Starting in the Fall of 2010,the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate will begin offering a full-time daytime study option for the Master of Science in Real Estate with Concentration in Real Estate Development.  The option will be exclusively for full-time students pursing a 15-month degree.

I think this is a great move for the program and one that was inevitable if the program wanted to compete on a national level. More directly, the full-time option will allow the program to compete here in NYC against the Columbia Masters in Real Estate Program, which only offers a full-time masters in real estate development. Students often choose Columbia over NYU because of the full-time option. However, I think NYU offers a greater array of opportunities outside of the classroom and has a more formidable alumni base in the New York area.

The NYU Real Estate Program has been great, however I’ve found a number of issues with the mix of full-time and part-time students. In general, the part-time students take 1 or 2 classes per semester, where the full-time students take 4 classes. Classes are primarily project-based where 3 or 4 students team up for a semester long report culminating in a final presentation. In my experience, it’s the full-time students that end up doing a majority of the work. This has nothing to do with the work ethic or dedication of the part-time students, but rather the lack of time to focus on the project. It’s difficult for students working 9-5 to arrange to meet outside of the classroom. Alternatively, full-time students can meet throughout the day and work on their projects.

Having said that, there are also pros to mixing full-time students with full-time workers. The full-time workers are more abreast to the industry and have access to market tools and resources. It remains an interesting dynamic and I have learned so much from both professors and students alike. Establishing a full-time daytime option is a huge step for the program and one that will be very beneficial in the long-run.
