The Re-branding of the NYU Real Estate Institute, I mean NYU SCHACK

From here on out I will only refer to the NYU Real Estate Institute as NYU Schack.

Unlike programs such as the University of Wisconsin and Cornell Real Estate programs which are housed under their respective business schools, NYU Schack is part of the School for Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). With this comes a stigma, much like Harvard’s extension school. This connotation has hampered the reputation of the program. However, despite being the largest and most well-known program within SCPS, NYU Schack has no intention of becoming its own school or part of NYU Stern. Rather, the focus has been on creating an identifiable brand.  One that denotes excellence and community in the commercial real estate space.

In an effort to re-brand itself, there have been full page ads taken out in the Wall Street Journal and the Commercial Observer like the one below:

What will NYU Schack have to do to create a valuable brand in the New York City real estate scene?

    Joe,

First off, I think your blog is fantastic. You impart wonderful information, share interesting insights and provide some stellar back links. Kudos.

As for NYU Schack, sponsoring panels and seminars populated with well regarded real estate practitioners would go a long way toward branding the institution. How about partnering with the NY Times on some type of publication that highlights future trends?

    Just some thoughts.

Anthony thanks for your comments and kind words. I think that's a great idea. Something the program is working hard on is introducing a research institute. Working on research will allow the program to get its name out there.

    Thanks for reading.

Joe, Im a big fan of the blog and current Schack student. I think you make a great point about how Schack is hirt by being part of SCPS. The program would be fantastic if it were either on its own (like at MIT) or part of Stern (like the real estate concentration is at Wharton). Unfortunately, as with all things in life, especially at a large university such as NYU, it all comes down to money. Schack is such a huge moneymaker for SCPS and, politically I just can't imagine that SCPS would let it go to a rival part of the school (like Stern) or to even form its own department. This is sad. What are your thoughts?

One aspect of Schack that is tied into this and that I would like to see you discuss more on this blog or at REISA is the fact that the facility on 42nd street is completely substandard for both a graduate level program and compared to both the law school and the Stern school at NYU. If Schack wants to “play in the big leagues”, so to speak, it needs a much better facility to market itself. The fact that the facility itself is so poorly outfitted for academic study and learning is an irony in an of itself.

    Joe,

A research center would very nice. Corporations and businesspeople would seek access and the connections for the students would be invaluable.

When a blog is good kind words are not difficult to muster.;-)
