One of my favorite companies happens to be a non real estate-related company, 37 Signals. The site OnStartups put together a great list from the book “Rework” written by the founders of 37 Signals that can be applied into any business. Think about how these can be incorporated to a real estate company.

Here are some of my favorites from the list:

1. Great businesses have a point of view, not just a product or service.

2. Stuff that was impossible just a few years ago is simple today.

3. Failure is not a prerequisite for success.

4. Don’t make assumptions about how big you should be ahead of time.

5. Solving your own problem lets you fall in love with what you’re making.

6. What you do matters, not what you think or say or plan.

7. When you want something bad enough, you make the time.

8. The perfect time to start something never arrives.

9. Decide. You’re as likely to make a great call today as you are tomorrow.

10. All companies have customers. Fortunate companies have audiences too.

11. Let customers look behind the curtain.

12. Don’t hire for pleasure; hire to kill pain.

Took this one straight from my heart Joe. I love 37signals and probably OnStartups even more.

I am not sure how I feel about #5 on that list. Most entrepreneurs begin by solving a problem they had that carries over into the market. When I look for business solutions I begin by assessing how I felt after a certain interaction – with a product, with a service, whatever it may be – and to me the assumption is that there are doubtless others out there like me so the feeling is transferable.

I would be interested to see how others assess business solutions…
