I have long been a huge proponent of modular building, which oddly enough closely resembles that of a game of Tetris. Check out this cool video of a game of Tetris being played with old Soviet-era housing blocks.
The benefits of modular block-style building are plentiful – from lower manufacturing costs and reduced material use to being able to quickly construct complex forms that can be portable and highly adaptable. The idea is simple, you can build beautiful elaborate structures from simple modules. I strongly believe the future of sustainable development (that sounded kind of ironic) is looking toward prefabricated building and increased density to solve some of our challanges.
Check out this slideshow online prescriptions on Inhabit to view 13 cool prefabricated buildings. I’ll have to check out the Philadelphia building next time I’m home and report back.
Do you think there is a stigma that comes along with prefabricated buildings?
