FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m considering NYU and Columbia masters in real estate, what are the major differences between the two programs?
Both the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate and Columbia University’s Center for Real Estate Development are great programs, but they have some major differences and are fit for certain types of students. One of these days I’ll get around to dedicating an entire post to the subject. But for now, here are the major differences between the two programs: Columbia students are required to take the program full-time where a majority of students (about 75%) in the NYU program take course part-time. The NYU program consists of 16 courses where the Columbia program is an intensive year and a half of full-time courses. At the Columbia real estate program students must focus on development, where as at NYU students can choose between development, finance, and asset management. The NYU program is larger, consisting of nearly 500 students ranging from all ages and backgrounds. Check out the student reviews of the NYU program and the Columbia program.
I’m applying to the NYU program, do you have any suggestions to help me through the application process?
The key to the application process is to show that you’re passionate about real estate. Go above and beyond the required application material. Submit more than 2 essays, expand upon your personal statement, make sure your resume is perfect and reflects your experience in the best light. If you can, visit the school and set up a meeting to speak with one of the professors or admissions officers. Reach out to current students. All of this will show your dedication and enthusiasm for the program which is what the admissions committee is looking for in a student.

Auburn University has a Masters in Real Estate Development
Thanks for letting me know Brad, I'll have to add it to the list. Are you currently enrolled in the program or do you have any contacts in the program? I'd love to get a review of the program for the blog.
Hello Joe:
I enjoy your blog.
I have 2 years of experience working at a community bank whose main portfolio is CRE.
I already hold a Master's degree in Economics at Rutgers, I would like to pursue the Certificate in RE, any suggestions to get through the process? Do you think it would be easier for me to get admission? I am Peruvian and got my college degree in Peru.
Any sugestions?
